Gay Life in Prague
Oftentimes travelers don't associate Eastern Europe with the words "progressive" or "gay-friendly," but when it comes to the Czech Republic maybe they should. While no one was paying attention Prague has quietly been making itself into a destination for gay tourists, with new clubs, parks and hotels catering to the homosexual community. Several hotels in Prague aren't just gay-friendly, they're actually gay owned and operated. Places like the Arco Guest House or Nouvum Garden offer intimate venues near the city center and clubbing areas. The Clarion Hotel in Old Town might not be gay owned, but it is the only four-star hotel in Prague to have membership in the IGLTA (International Gay, Lesbian, Transgender Association) and is close to all the usual tourist sites.
No Prague holiday would be complete without a look at the club scene. Ladies should check out Jampa Dampa, it's the go-to Lesbian hangout in Prague and has a great disco and karaoke scene. Or try Club Termix and On (formerly Valentino), both high energy locations in the heart of the city. Both clubs are frequented by the locals and feature parties, dancing and lots of music.
If you're looking for a more relaxing venue The Saints is the perfect place. British owned, The Saints bills itself as the "friendliest gay bar" in town. It is filled with comfortable seating great for lounging about after a hard night of partying.
Getting to Prague is easy. Flights to Prague run through Ruzyne, the airport that services the city, and with both Ryanair and EasyJet flying into the city fares are relatively inexpensive. Unfortunately there are no subways that link from the airport to the city centre. There is bus service linking to different metro lines, but for those in a hurry taxis might be a better option and run only about 25 Euros.
Either way, check out the tourist information desk near the arriving planes where the helpful staff will get you a free city map and help you get to the city proper. Luckily all of their staff speaks both English and German. They can even point you in the direction of a Prague car hire companies, of which there are several.
During the day take some time out to enjoy the Castle and Charles Bridge, or any of the ten major museums scattered throughout the city. Prague is the jewel of Eastern Europe, be sure to make time to enjoy it.
